Halo 3 Con Resigner Released: Other Words… Modding Galore

Filed under: Gaming, Interview — Benjamin @ 4:46 pm on July 5th, 2008

All you Halo 2 players might remember that just about 1 out of every 10 games you would play, some guy would be modding the game, either with new maps, personal attribute upgrades, bridging or standbying. All this action was awesomely fun to a whole community of modders, and with the birth of “Fun Mods” even the non-modders out there could easily defy the laws of the game with the greatest of ease. Well, as Halo 3 modding began, you have to crack the code to, what modders call, “resign” a map so that its once again playable on your Xbox. Well, until just last week only 10 people had these legendary modding tools (seen above) to hack Xbox Live to there liking. Now, I was lucky enough to get in contact to some of the unique, Halo 3 modders over at iBotModz.net, one of the many hit modding sites specializing in Halo 3 modding. Check after the break to see a quick interview I had with some of those modders.

Now remember that I have interviewed multiple people, so you’ll see a variety of answers, some varying each other.

What are your views on Halo 3 modding?

“It’s a step forward… not as great as it was in HAlo 2, but sooner or later hard working dedicated individuals will figure it out, just as it has been figured out so far”
“I liked the usermap modding, and “supposed” MAP modding coming from Veegie and what not. I dislike the “bad” screenshots, but enjoy uploading bukket pictures.”
“I think it is a great way to express your creativity and intelligence.”

What exactly does this “Con Resigner” do to help modders mod Halo 3?

“The Con Resigner allows for Container files such as forge variants, film clips and alot of other 360 content to be usable on the 360. If you do not resign the file will NOT be played on the 360.”
“Without one, modders cannot properly use any reinjected modified content on their 360 Hard Drives.”
“It allows a container file to be “resigned” so it can be re-run on Halo 3 and read correctly”

What other tools are required in order to mod Halo 3?

“1. A method of getting into your HDD : Xsata or Xport or a transfer cable.
2. Knowledge of using xplorer 360 and partitiona dn Halo 3 file locations
3. A Resigner and a Rehasher, maybe a splitter and merger… and various Hexing tools.”

“Xport/XSATA for getting the mods off your xbox
Hex editor modding the usermap/film/screenshot
Hasher fixing the hashes you broke by modding it
Resigner resigning the file so it can be read”

Could you briefly describe the steps it takes in order to mod a Halo 3 map?

“Basically its just taking a map from your HDD, then replacing items that are already there with items that normally cannot be put into a map with forge… via a Hex editor and identifiers. Then you hash it and sign it to your console and put it back in and hope it works.”

And some aren’t even positive yet and modding is not quite a walk in the park: “idk something with usermap ids and hashers and signers”

Do you think it was the right decision for the “Con Resigner” to get released to the public?

“Yes and No.
Yes- because it allowed people outside of the modding scene, who didnt have connections, a starting point for modding, without having to “know people” or “have their own Signer”.
No- Its a double edge sword… look at the whole “B.net FileShares Incident”.”
“Yeah, so Bungie can ban it and “noobs” that want to mod can without annoying PM’s asking to resign/rehash/transfer files”
“no, ruined it for all of us”

Do you think that Bungie will be able to stop modders dead in there tracks from modding Halo 3?

“Halt modding? No… keypairs will keep coming as long as 360’s and NAND dumps are possible. Shade45’s ReSigner being updated is one good example.”
“Yeah, keyvaults being banned. There is no end”
“No they havent done and will not do anything but ban fileshares and matchmaking.”

For modders, what do you think is the next step to modding Halo 3?

“Getting Newer and bigger things into Forged Maps… playable mods, and maybe even some new interesting things already being worked on…”
“Making tools to make it easier than just using a hex editor.”
“Cracking an impossible RSA encryption”
“campaign modding”

Thanks to everyone from iBotModz for all of there input. And if your interested in modding Halo 3 and might quite possibly get banned, you can check out iBotModz to pick up your own Con Resigner and hopefully a little more knowledge to get you on your way to modding Halo 3! Cheers everyone!
