Phil Schiller led the way at WWDC 2009 this year, introducing the new Macbook Pro line and the new iPhone 3G S. Bertrand Serlet talked about Snow Leopard, and Scott Forstall talked iPhone 3.0. But when Phil was talking about the new Macbook's he was saying what he was told to say, not what he thought.

Phil Schiller

Yes, WWDC 2009 was a few weeks ago, but its taken us quite some time to properly decipher Phil Schiller's words when it comes to him talking about Macbook's. Below is a list of some of the quotes, from Phil, throughout the keynote... when he was talking about the Macbook Pro's that is. The text in bold is what was actually said from Phil, the text in italics is what our expert panel has deciphered what Phil was actually thinking as he made each comment. So let's begin:

So I’m really happy, to show you first today a brand new version of the 15" Macbook Pro. - "It would have been Steve up here, but I stole his limelight."

Its built on this unibody architecture that allows us to pack more things into a thin design, than anyone else does. - "By unibody, we mean one piece, and by anyone else, we mean Dell."

This battery gives an amazing, up to 7 hours of battery life. - "Err... more like 5 hours if your actually using the computer."

A typical notebook user will get about 5 years of life before they see diminished charge in that notebook battery. - "You'll have bought a new Macbook from us before you ever even need to replace that battery!"

Most customers may never need to change the battery in there notebook because it will last that long. - "It may last that long, but that’s just for bragging rights, the computer will be dead by then, even if the battery still works."

When you open it up, the new 15" Macbook Pro has a gorgeous display, in fact, its the nicest display we've ever put in a notebook. - "We really challenged our photographers to take some really stunning shots, to make it look even better than it actually is..."

In place of the express card slot, which was used by less than a single digit percentage of our customers. - "I guess no one cares that I was on that boat."

It is the fastest notebook we've ever made. - "Its the fastest we've ever made, not the fastest on the market, however."

You can configure it up to 3.06 GHz Intel dual-core processor with 6Megas of L2 cache. - "Ooo... big long, techie words... I feel so cool!"

You can get up to 500GB, half a terabyte, inside this notebook. - "Only half a terabyte? Where's the full terabyte I requested?"

So this is an incredible, new, 15" Macbook Pro, with all these features and capabilities and it starts at an even lower price of just $1699. - "Its cheaper than it was before... or was it...?"

And all of these, the new 15" Macbook Pro's and the updated configuration of the 17" are shipping today. - "You can expect to pick your up at your local Apple store in a few days, a week tops."

Because doesn't every Macbook Pro deserve a FireWire 800. - "So when's FireWire 1200 coming out again?"

That really completes the Macbook Pro family. - "So which one is the daddy?"

This is the worlds greenest lineup of notebooks. - "Take that Dell, green I tell you, green."

Great hardware, deserves great software, so to tell you whats going on with Mac OS X 10, I'd like to invite up Bertrand Serlet. - "Am I the only person here who loves this guys accent?"

***On a note, we hope you realize that these are fake, and are made up by us. This was made for entertainment purposes simply because we can't wait to see Steve Jobs back up on that stage soon.***

Tech Tip: Buy the right RAM for your computer PDF Print E-mail

Whether your machine feels like its running a little sluggish, or your looking to breathe new life into a older machine, or you just happen to be in the market for some new computer memory (also known as RAM in a computer). There are more than a few things you should know about the memory your going to buy.

Just about every computer (desktop and laptop) I've ever owned, used, seen, touched, tried, tested, or repaired has had a way, and usually a fairly simple way to replace the RAM (random access memory), also just known as "computer memory" or just computer RAM, without you needing a repairman to do it for you. When your building your own computer, knowing exactly the kind of memory your buying for your computer is always necessary; and when your replacing or adding memory to an existing computer, you need to know everything about the memory you need to buy like you know the back of your hand.

RAM

1. Know Your Budget

Like all other parts of a computer, the memory inside your computer plays an important role in deciding how fast to let applications open and run. Even though other parts of your machine, like processor and motherboard, should be near the top of your shopping list, don't count out the RAM you need. Depending on the kind of computer memory you buy, it can be fairly expensive, or come at a great cost for a good product. Before you even start to shop for what you need, set your budget, because if you keep telling yourself you can spend that extra $20, when you don't have the extra $400 you thought you had total... well then you had a problem.

2. Find Out Your Memory Type

If your building a new computer you can completely skip this step, simply because this step is for identifying the current memory you have in your computer through special software called AIDA32. If your building your own computer, you just have to be sure that the memory your buying is compatible with the motherboard your buying. AIDA32 can be downloaded right here on Ace Of Tech, right here. There are no splash pages or anything when you click that link, it will just pop up and say its downloading. I have tested it and you have my work that there’s no virus, etc. And one of the best parts is that you don't even have to install it. Just download the file, unRAR it, open the folder, and click on the little computer icon that ends in .EXE. This will launch the program. Once there, click on Motherboard --> SPD then whatever pops up is the RAM your currently have in your computer. Then select one of the drop downs. Like mine looks like below, this will tell you a lot about the memory your have in your computer. Including its form factor!

AIDA32

As you can see, I'm running a Dell machine, and memory type is DDR2 SDRAM. There are many other types including: DIMM, SDRAM, DDR SDRAM, DDR2 SDRAM, and DDR3 SDRAM. Along with those, there is a number of pins that each one has, which usually lines up like this:

  • DIMM --> 100 Pins
  • SDRAM --> 168 Pins
  • DDR SDRAM --> 184 Pins
  • DDR2 SDRAM --> 240 Pins
  • DDR3 SDRAM --> 240 Pins

Do note that there are other types of RAM out there including special RAM like 144 Pin SO-DIMM , 200 Pin DDR SO-DIMM, 200 Pin, DDR2 SO-DIMM, and 204 Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM. As mentioned, this kind of RAM is a little more uncommon, simply because its laptop memory. Its built differently, works differently, and is overall, designed to work better with portable devices, like your laptop. Also looking above we can see my memory speed is at 400MHz. Now, the only way you'll really be able to tell if your motherboard can support faster is to check the specs of the board either with the manual you (should have) received with your computer, or online at the site your buying from. Usually when purchasing from companies like Dell, they put small amounts of the fastest type of RAM possible in your machine. Now I know that my motherboard has 4 RAM slots, and supports up to 4GB, but my operating system (Windows XP 32-bit) only supports up to 3.2GB. So if I wanted to accurately add more RAM to my machine, I could buy two, 1GB sticks of DDR2 SDRAM running at 400MHz, and one more stick of 512MB DDR2 SDRAM also running at 400MHz. Get it?

3. Pick Out A Capacity

This depends a lot of your budget and what type of OS you run. Note that 32-bit operating systems only support up to 3.2GB. So even if your motherboard supports up to 24GB, and stick 24GB is there, only 3.2GB of it is going to be useable by the computer. A 64 bit OS usually supports a minimum of 12GB, so you shouldn't be worried there. When selecting RAM sizes, you can go as low as 128MB, up to 4GB. When buying RAM, I recommend buying the largest size you can. Why? I'll use an example. If you had nine, 128MB sticks, and I had one, 1GB stick, mine would work faster. Because when your on your computer (say on the internet) and your trying to load a data-intensive site, like YouTube, your computer has to fill up like 4 of your sticks, then has to read back from each one... way too slow. Or, the computer can just save everything to one large stick, and read from it later. Just be sure your computer, motherboard, and OS support the amount of RAM you plan on running it with!

And that’s (basically) it! There are a few other small areas I might have missed, but if you can't fill in the blanks, then maybe you do need to contact your local computer store and ask them to take on the job for you. It’s not the hard I assure you... just stay confident and your machine will be running faster than ever!

E3 2009 Gaming Expo: Roundup PDF Print E-mail

June 1st through the 4th was one of the biggest E3 Gaming Expo's to ever go down in the L.A. Convention Center. Featuring numerous product demos, and a look into your gaming future, each top gaming company showed there stuff, and showed it well. Here's the main points you may have missed over the past few days.

Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo all had there official press conferences and showed the gaming community what they believed was the future of gaming. Whether that be in the living room, or on the Go. Microsoft kicked off the event with their press conference early Monday morning, and they really packed a punch. Lets see what went down with Microsoft:

  • Project Natal: Rumors of Microsoft own "motion" controller had been swirling for quite some time, but probably one of the biggest announcements at Microsoft’s E3 presentation was the demo of Project Natal. Though details are sketchy to this motion controller, you really can't even call it a controller at all! Your body is the real controller as a 3D motion sensor camera picks up all your bodies’ movements and even features facial and voice recognition. Demos that were seen included painting a canvas just by (literally) telling the game what color you want, then by (virtually) picking up a bucket of paint and throwing it against the wall. Other demos included what looked like full-fledged RPG games with complete interaction with other game characters. No release date, or price for that matter, was mentioned, but it was noted that Project Natal (the 3D camera) will work with your current Xbox 360 and any other future Xbox consoles Microsoft decides to make.
Project Natal
  • Last.fm Integration: Subscribers of Gold Xbox Live will now be able to enjoy streaming Last.fm radio right on there console with no addition costs. This feature, added for no particular reason, was noted to help make your Xbox 360 more than just an average gaming console; which is what it has been slated over the past years.
  • Netflix Enhancements: Like I mentioned, as Microsoft continually pushes to make the Xbox 360 better for more than just gaming, they have updated the Netflix service available to Gold Subscribers. Now, you no longer have to go back to your computer to add a movie to your queue list. Performance upgrades and other small enhancements were noted, but not demoed.
  • SkyTV Live TV Service: Available to those in the UK and Ireland, subscribers of Gold Xbox Live will be able to have live, streaming TV content right on there Xbox 360 without any addition connections. Limited to just this one service, this should be a start in helping kick your TiVo and other set-top boxes out of your TV rack.
  • More Social Interaction: Like Microsoft has intended with the avatars, staying social is always the best. And now, you can even link your Xbox Live Accounts to your very own Facebook and twitter accounts. For those of you that can't stop tweeting, or have to constantly check your BFF's status, this new integration should help you to do just that, right from your couch.
  • Zune Video Marketplace: Like many don't know, the old video and movie marketplace was ages behind when it came to getting you content you wanted right away. Being rebranded as the Zune Video Marketplace, you can now download all your favorite videos and movies instantly (with no wait!) at full 1080p HD. And you can even gather your friends and watch movies together! Well, that'd be you and your avatars watching movies together. And you can even interact and help spoil the movie through clever avatar actions like clapping and booing.
  • Rock Band - Beatles Edition: Both Ringo Star and Paul McCarthy showed up to show there love for the digital copies of themselves rocking out in the newest edition to the Rock Band game.
  • Halo ODST & Halo Reach: Bungie's super secret project was all but released and Microsoft touted new game play, more ways to kill, and another reason to hate the line of Halo products... well, not yet at least.
  • Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: One of the most anticipated games of the year, CoD: Modern Warfare 2 was demoed with some sick trailers, intense graphics, and stunning sounds. Slated for later this year, watch the shelves for this one.
Nintendo went second, starting the press conference early Tuesday morning and later being followed by Sony. Not to exciting, but enough to keep us waiting Nintendo had one of the smaller presentations this year at E3, only to be trampled by Sony. But to gamers, Nintendo got the job done:
  • Metroid: Other M: One the of the biggest announces this year from Nintendo, and marked for a 2010 release: Metroid will be coming to the Wii. Followed by some slick game play demos, this is one that will keep gamers wanting.
Metroid: Other M
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2: The sequel to the original, Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, was demoed and showed up even more ways to love your favorite fat plumber: Mario. With a little less than half and hour of demo footage, fans of the original will want to keep there eye out for this one.
  • Super Mario Bros for Wii: The same classic we all played on the Gameboy back in the day has been reworked and ported over to the Nintendo Wii for some fun 4 player action. Demoed by 4 Nintendo employees, co-op play looked like the main reason to buy this game.
  • Sega's: The Conduit: In an attempt to show that Nintendo has at least one hardcore game ready for the Wii, they had a short demo of Sega's latest first person shooter, known as The Conduit.
  • Resident Evil: The Dark Side Chronicles: Nintendo stayed brief when showing off there new line of hardcore games, showing off some intense campaign play in the new Resident Evil game, that will be available on the Wii.
  • Dead Space Extraction: The final hardcore game demoed from Nintendo really brought the most silence to the room touting some serious game play. For the hardcore gamer on a family console; don't miss this title coming to your Nintendo Wii.
Dead Space Extraction
  • DSi Social Party: Its not that much of a party, especially when you can't even get your own DSi here in North America; but Nintendo did show off some new abilities for your DSi to use the camera to take photos, edit them, and upload them directly to Facebook. Like Microsoft, Nintendo wants you to be able to show your friends how addicted your are to taking photos of yourself and uploading them for everyone to see.
  • Wii Motion Plus: Mainly seen last year, more videos and new demos of the add-on to the WiiMote where shown. Demos included being able to shoot a bow and arrow with almost pin-point accuracy and firing a digital basketball toward the hoop with the precision of Shaq. Still no release date, but probably coming later this year, Nintendo dubs this as the future of the Nintendo Wii platform.
  • Wii Fit Plus: If you enjoy working out from your Wii balance board then your going to love the latest addition to Wii Fit. The one and only Wii Fit Plus allows you to be your own trainer and customize your workout to your needs. Included is 10 new mini games; this add-on is market for the Fall of '09.
  • Wii Vitality Sensor: It was only shown to us for a full 5 minutes before Nintendo decided to move on, but its something to be noted. This small add-on plugs right into your WiiMote and allows you to insert your index finger into it for a plethora of details on your body, including indentifying your mood and pulse. Details are still very skeptical and how this will make gaming more fun, but it wasn't mentioned to be launched anytime soon, so I wouldn't count on it.
Finishing up the pack, Sony went last, but didn't stop short of impressing the crowd. Introducing new add-ons to the PSP line and demoing off some of the most anticipated games of the year, Sony packed a punch, and hit hard with there press conference just hours after hearing about the latest Mario games, so did Sony leave the crowd satisfied:
  • PSP Go: One of the worst kept secrets of E3 was also one of the best. New from Sony, is the $249.99 PSP Go. Unlike any other PSP, this new model features just a screen, then a slick sliding function revealing the game controller. Without a UMD drive, but with built in WiFi and bluetooth, this PSP was built for the "Digital Lifestyle". It still runs the same PSP operating system, and runs the same games, but you'll have to load them from either the 16GB of internal memory of from the Memory Stick Micromedia Port, also known as the M2 port. Coming in 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the original PSP1000, the new PSP Go will not replace the UMD and will still be sold alongside the PSP3000. Available on October 1st in both North America and Europe, this new addition brings more than just a new device but a new media manager for your PC called Media Go. From Media Go, you'll be able to purchase the latest games for your device and sync over your music, movies, photos, and games through one program. Launching with exclusive games like Grand Turismo with over 800 cars are 35 tracks; the PSP Go should be a good step into the future available in a short while.
PSP Go
  • Hannah Montana PSP: The crowd was cheering with excitement with this one, but a new Hannah Montana themed PSP was showed off by Sony right after seeing the PSP Go. This smash hit should hit shelves the same time as the PSP Go, but will sell million more we assume.
  • Sony Motion Controller: Similar to Project Natal from Microsoft, Sony gave a very brief demo of there rendition of a motion-sensitive controller. Like Project Natal, it doesn't actually appear to be a real, physical controller, but it does look its going to be based of the iToy camera they use. Demos were slick and showed some great examples when it comes to physics and like-likeness. In one demo, the game identified where the users hand was and placed a baseball bat in there hand. And as they swung there hand around, the digital bat followed. Very cool.
  • God Of War III: Moving into the game demos coming from Sony's presentation, one of the best was the demo of God Of War III. Full of blood, guts, and gore, this intense-looking game got the crowd excited and waiting. Like Halo for the Xbox, God Of War III should be one of the top sellers, but still without a slated release date, its hard to know where this game will be coming.
  • MAG 256 Player Game: This game was discussed last year, and was finally showed off at Sony's presentation. Like Call of Duty with 256 players, this action filled game looks like a sure-fire hit that is... if the game doesn't lag. Huge amounts of technology have gone into the development of this one game and hopefully it will all be worth it. Games like Call Of Duty and Halo can minimize how bad lag effects games, but others like Gears of War on the Xbox is a perfect example of how even one player with a bad connection can ruin a game. Hopefully, this game has worked through the kinks and is ready to bring a meaning to the name of a full fledged (digital) war.
  • Final Fantasy XIV: In a classic example of an arms race in the gaming world. Sony demoed the exclusive Final Fantasy XIV (14) with some slick game play. This online classic will carry on the legend and tradition this game has brought in its previous 13 versions. Hopefully the PS3 version can carry on the tradition.
  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves: Almost like Gears of War for the Playstation console, the exclusive game was also shown with a smooth trailer, some intense graphics and life-like sounds... especially if your have surround sound speakers! Just another game to look forward to on the PS3, this one should stay close to the top of your list.

And thats a wrap! Check back here tomorrow for all our coverage on the Palm Pre. And don't miss our review, includes our rants and raves on this unique device! Cheers.

Back from finals, I've returned, completed, and ready to write. So what did I think you guys needed to hear about first? What about this month of June! Some big stuff is going on and I just wanted to give you a little preview of each! Use the faint-looking calander above to check dates, but check below to see a little more about each event and what might be expected!

  • June 1: This is the first day of the big E3 conference. Well what is E3? Well the Electronic Entertainment Expo (codenamed E3) is what you might call the CES (or consumer electronics show) of video games! Thats right! Top companies like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo come out and boast about what they have been working on recently. Its really quite exciting. Below is todays three events:
  1. Microsoft Press Conference: 10:30 a.m. PDT, June 1
  2. Electronic Arts Press Conference: 2:00 p.m. PDT, June 1
  3. Ubisoft Press Conference: 5:00 p.m. PDT, June 1
  • June 2: This is day 2 of the 4 day long event of E3. And this day will bring some juicy stuff! There are only 2 main events on June 2nd, but they are probably of the most enteraining. Both Sony and Nintendo will share there thoughts and ideas... and well, err, Sony's were already leaked! The Sony PSP Go is the newest model entering the PSP line. With a new slim design, bigger screen, and a slide-revealed set of Playstation controls, its surely a different approach on a popular idea. Below is the listed times for both events:
  1. Nintendo Press Conference: 9:00 a.m. PDT, June 2
  2. Sony Press Conference: 11:00 a.m. PDT, June 2
  • June 3 & 4: This is the final days of the E3 gaming show and these days shouldn't disappoint. There will not, however, be any more big-name companies having press conferences and showings like there have been over the other two days, but these days will still be action-packed no doubt!
  • June 5: Nothing fun is happening today... go rest up, tomorrows a big day!
  • June 6: Today is the long awaited launch of the one and only Palm Pre! For $200 (with a contract and proper rebates, that is) you can pick up your very own Palm Pre, exclusively on the Sprint network. This is truly be a big day for Palm, and hopefully the Pre will rise above and beyond the competition. As the Pre pulled out multipule awards as CES2009, this will be a day to remember.
  • June 7: Nothing... again. But gets even more sleep, cause you won't have the chance after today!
  • June 8: Phil Schiller (no, not Steve Jobs) will kick off WWDC (or World Wide Developers Conference) early in the morning of this Monday. The rumor mill has been in full swing and what we can hopefully expect to see is that new iPhone we've all been waiting for. In other news, Apple should give us another sneak peak, if not a planned launch date, for 10.6, codenamed Snow Leopard.
  • June 9-12: WWDC has been sold out for quite some time now so if you didn't get your tickets in, well I hate to be the one to tell you, but your not just going to be able to walk in and sit down. But this won't be much fun for you if your not a developer. But if you are a developer, your going to love your 4 action packed days of speaking to some of the most professional Apple software developers around. Its quite an event, and you'll be glad you atteneded.
Well thats it! Its a lot of stuff for the next two weeks, so here at Ace Of Tech, we will try and keep you as up to date as you can be with everything you'd want to know! That it for now, Cheers!

Howdy!

Well, as the story goes, I purchased Guitar Hero 3 for the Xbox 360 on Wednesday. Being impressed by the guitar's sheer sexiness, I was ready to rock it out. But, to my dismay, my yellow button was unresponsive!

After some troubleshooting, I came to the realization that the fret board (the long black shaft with the green, red, yellow, blue, and orange buttons) was a little loose. So, as any D.I.Y-er would do, I took it apart! Some of my findings will come later in this tutorial, as I believe them to not be the direct cause of unresponsive buttons; I don't want to confuse anyone. Now this isn't the sure-fire, approved fix, but for me, and others I'm sure! Its a quick and easy solution that will make you enjoy Guitar Hero 3 again! Or, err, for the first time!

Without further ado, my Guitar Hero 3 Guitar Fix:
